Architecture Design and Hope

Toronto’s design future is bright. In my heart that is what I want to believe and that is how I have been acting. I intend to work with this expectation into the future. Toronto is a product it’s province and a product of this country. This country is a product of its people. Therefore, by deduction Toronto’s design future ultimately depends on its people.

At the risk of sounding or being insincere or sarcastic, our existence as people is driven by hope. Hope of being loved and hope of finding love. … Give me a moment, I will get back to design and architecture in a moment … People who fear that another (person, group or place) will take their love away or their ability to find or maintain that love or place of love, will through many actions and withholding of actions commit grave and sometimes terrible things.

Toronto is a metaphor for hope; a kind of hope in an array of hope. People and their relationship to one another are the greatest forms of architecture that we can build. Toronto is young. That is its hope. The young (us) cannot know what we don’t know. As such we of Toronto the young will often act with belligerence, rampant disregard for another person, group, place or thing while it (we) grow and collect wisdom. In other words we will make huge errors of judgment because we can even though we think of ourselves as modern, smart and imperious by nature. Moreover, it is how we (Toronto) recover and learn from those errors that hope is still alive.

I may have to step away from Toronto in my mind, heart or in my person from time to time in order to recover and heal from the small, medium and large acts of ignorance and malicious intent directed toward me as I pursue being a supportive and creative citizen in my personal actions and with my designs for this city and province. A designer is only as good as his client will allow him to be. So it is of a community as well.
